Ross Burns is the author of four works on the archaeology and history of Syria and the region. Monuments of Syria was first published in 1992 and has since had a succession of paperback and revised editions including one in French. In 2009, it was re-published in a thoroughly revised third English edition by I B Tauris, London. In 2005, Damascus – A History was published (Routledge, London) — the only examination at book length in English of this key Arab capital. This is now available in a paperback edition. Aleppo, A History was published by Routledge in 2016 and his Ph D thesis, revised in book form, was published by Oxford University Press in 2017 — Origins of the Colonnaded Streets in the Cities of the Roman East. 

Ross was for many years in the Australian Foreign Service and had a number of Middle Eastern assignments. He has also accompanied as lecturer a number of tours to Syria, Lebanon and Jordan for the British travel company, Martin Randall Travel, and for the Melbourne firm, Australians Studying Abroad. He completed a Ph D in urban landscapes in the Roman Near East at Macquarie University in Sydney in 2011. This study  looks at the role of the strikingly distinctive feature that marks many of the cities of the Roman Eastern provinces — their long straight avenues lined with columns which define the shape of the whole city in one commanding perspective.

الكتاب الثالث (حلب ـ التاريخ) نشر عام 2016 في لندن

الكتاب الرابع، وهو موضوع رسالة الدكتوراه للمؤلف، بعنوان (أصول الشوارع ذات الأعمدة في مدن الشرق الروماني) صدر في 2017 عن مطبعة جامعة أكسفورد

عمل روس سابقاً في وزارة الخارجية الأسترالية لعدة سنين وشغل عدة مناصب في منطقة الشرق الأوسط، كما عمل بصفة محاضر مرافق لعدة جولات سياحية إلى سورية ولبنان والأردن ضمن شركة سفر بريطانية وأخرى في ملبورن، ومع الطلاب الاستراليين في الخارج

حصل على شهادة الدكتوراه في (معالم الأرض المدنية في الشرق الأقصى الروماني) من جامعة ماكوير في سدني عام 2011، وقد نشرت هذه الدراسة عام 2017 في الكتاب المذكور وهو يبحث في دور أحد المعالم المميزة بوضوح التي تتسم بها عدة مدن في الولايات الشرقية الرومانية: الشوارع المستقيمة الطويلة المزودة بالأعمدة، التي تحدد شكل المدينة بأكملها بمنظور واضح وقوي
