The Roman road joining Berytus (Beirut) and Heliopolis (Baalbek) to Damascus passed along the gorge of the Barada River. A cutting was made during the years AD 161–169 to raise the road well above the flood level of the winter torrents in the region. According to the inscriptions at the site, the people of nearby Abila (Suq Wadi Barada today) were required to raise the funds for the road improvements on the instructions of the Roman Legate, Julius Verus, during the joint reigns of Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus.
الطريق الروماني الذي يصل بين بيروتوس (بيروت) وهليوبوليس (بعلبك) ودمشق كان يمر عبر وادي نهر بردى الضيق، وقد حفر جزء من هذا الطريق في صخور الجبل أعلى الوادي خلال الفترة 161-169 م حتى يصبح منسوبه أعلى من منسوب مياه النهر التي ترتفع كثيراً في الشتاء نتيجة السيول التي تصب فيه.
تم تخليد هذا المشروع بنقش كتابي مؤلف من عدة أجزاء يشير إلى مساهمة سكان بلدة آبيلا المجاورة (سوق وادي بردى حالياً) بتكاليف فتح الطريق وذلك في عهد حاكم سورية يوليوس فيروس خلال فترة الحكم المشترك للإمبراطورين الرومانيين ماركوس اوريليوس ولوسيوس فيروس.
